Nokian
Kerholassa järjestettiin lauantaina 28.9.2019 klo 15 ilmaiskonsertti Toivo
Kärjen swing-sävelmien muistojen ympärille. Solistina konsertissa lauloi Ewa
Kaarela. Konsertin soittajakuntaa olivat Sakari Järvinen (piano,
kapellimestari), Jari Unha (rummut), Pertti Hurmalainen (basso), Mikko Välimäki
(trumpetti) ja Lucjan Czaplicki (saksofoni ja klarinetti). Tämä kokoonpano on
ahkerasti vieraillut soittamassa kotimaamme monilla areenoilla viihdyttäen kuulijoitaan
jazzin ilosanomalla. Konsertin vierailijana oli myös säveltäjä Toivo Kärjen
nuorin lapsi, eläkkeellä oleva matematiikanlehtori Nilsiästä, Kalervo Kärki
vaimonsa Marjatan kanssa. Kalervo Kärki lausui iltapäiväkonsertin aluksi
tervehdyssanat Nokian Kerholaan kerääntyneelle yleisölle.
Nokian
Kerholan swing-konsertin ohjelmisto koostui ainoastaan ja yksinomaan säveltäjä
Toivo Kärjen sävellyksistä, jotka laulaja tulkitsi kaikki englanninkielellä.
Konsertin ensimmäisellä jaksolla kuultiin kappaleet Vanhan veräjän luona,
Havaian Starlight, Things Happen That Way, Hazel Eyes, Autumn Love, Midnight
Moon, Young Heart ja Waltz of Paradise. Väliajan jälkeisellä konsertin loppupuoliskolla
esitysvuorossa olivat mm. kappaleet Try not to Cry, Just Knowing That You Care,
Counting the Cost, A Little Wish, Swang Song to Love ja varsinaisena
ylimääräisenä konsertin päätöskappaleena Everywhere There’s Blues.
Iltapäiväkonsertin kappaleiden sovittajina toimivat mm. konsertin
kapellimestari, Sakari Järvinen, Antti Sarpila ja Jedrzej Novak. Reino
Helismaan alkuperäissanoituksia olivat lauluihin kääntäneet mm. Thelma Parker
ja Barbara Helsingius.
Nuori
säveltäjä Toivo Kärki otti osaa keväällä 1939 Rytmi-lehden sävellyskilpailuun
Lontoossa ja voitti toukokuussa kilpailun foxisävelmällään Things Happen That
Way, sävelmällä, jonka sanoitti Raymond Waye. Seuraavassa on sitaatti Rhytm’-lehden
mainitusta numerosta, jonka kirjoitti tuolloin Dan S. Ingan otsakkeella ”Songwriters’
Competition”:
”Song,
to stand any change at all, must tell a complete story, and not a hackneyed one
either. For instance, the winning lyric submitted for the May adjudications is
called Who Put the Kisses in Love? and it is the best of a somewhat indifferent
bunch. It was entered by Raymond Waye, of 46 Blewitt street, Newport, Mon. It
is competently written; It has a fairly novel idea behind it, but it does not
tell much of a story. It falls almost inevitably into the production class, and
hardly suggests itself as a commercial song. Nevertheless, congratulations to Mr.
Waye. He should feel encouraged now to wait for a more genuine inspiration,
since he appears to have the elements of the craft in his finger tips.
This
lyric will now go to TOIVO KARKI, of LAIHIA, SUOMI, FINLAND, who has won the
May composing competition with an untitled fox-trot, which is much out of the
rut and has a very good middle eight section. It will be Raymond Waye’s job to
fit a lyric to it.
Messrs.
Karki and Waye are required to deliver their completed works to Rhytm’s Office,
93 Long Acre, London W.C., by June 30, when they will be recorded at the Billy
Higgs Studios.
May
I express my apologies to previous winners for the delay in getting their
recording of their works to them. They were to have been sung by Al Bowlly, but
a bad throat affection has not yielded to treatment, and he cannot oblige as he
would have liked to have done.
Competitions
now continue for June. For the benefit of new readers, it must be repeated that
they are open to any songwriters in the country, amateur or professional, and
there are two sections: (1) for tunes without words, and (2) for lyrics without
music.”
